Why Set a Goal? #
Goals give your writing session structure. They help you:
- Know when you’re “done” (even if you keep going)
- Build a consistent writing habit
- Celebrate small wins with fireworks 🎆
You don’t have to set a goal. But many writers find it helpful.
Word Count Goals #
Set a target number of words to write. ILYS tracks your progress in real-time.
Good starting points:
- 100 words — Quick brain dump
- 250 words — Short journal entry
- 500 words — Solid writing session
- 1,000+ words — Deep dive
Time Goals #
Prefer to write for a set amount of time? Choose minutes instead of words.
Popular time goals:
- 5 minutes — Morning warm-up
- 15 minutes — Focused sprint
- 30 minutes — Deep session
- 60 minutes — Marathon mode
The timer runs while you’re writing inside the Writing Space. When time’s up, you can keep going or stop.
Changing Goals Mid-Session #
Changed your mind? Click the Goal icon in the Writing Space to adjust your target anytime. You can also remove the goal entirely if you want to write freely.
Focus Prompts #
A focus prompt is a short phrase or question that stays visible while you write. It keeps your mind pointed in the right direction.
Examples:
- “What am I grateful for today?”
- “Describe your ideal morning.”
- “Write about a challenge you overcame.”
- “Just write whatever comes to mind.”
Tips #
- Start with time goals if word counts feel intimidating
- Use prompts when you’re stuck or want to explore new themes
- Keep goals achievable — it’s better to exceed a small goal than fall short of a big one
- Celebrate every win — those fireworks are there for a reason!
